The jump from elementary to the big world of middle school is huge!
The goal is to create a positive experience from the start so we have developed a 5th to 6th grade transition program .
Phase 1: Mrs. Baker, Indian Valley's Elementary Counselor, will meet with all of our 5th grade students at both Midvale and Port Washington. She will introduce the concept of middle school and will conduct a pre-test with the students regarding their worries about transitioning to IVMS.
Phase 2: Mr. Carter & Mrs. Swaldo will meet with all 5th grade students in their classrooms. These are the first faces the students will meet from IVMS. During these sessions, students will be provided with basic information about IVMS.
Phase 3: All 5th graders come to IVMS for a tour and lunch! During this time, the student council meets with the 5th graders in small groups, gives them a tour of the building, and answers any questions. Both Port and Midvale will have lunch together for the first time! Students will also receive the IVMS Survival Guide. At the end, the students will complete the post-test for data collection purposes.
Phase 4: 6th grade Orientation in August. This is the final phase of the program. Students will come in the evening, pick up their schedule, find their locker, meet their teachers, and will hear another presentation about IVMS.
